Privacy policy

This policy explains what personal information Australia Motors collects, why, and what rights you have over it. We handle personal information in line with the Australian Privacy Principles under the Privacy Act 1988 (Cth).

What we collect

Account information: your name, email address, and a securely hashed password (we never store your password in readable form).

Listing information: everything you add to a listing — make, model, price, description, photos, and the suburb/postcode you specify. We never publish an exact street address; only the suburb and state are shown publicly. If you provide a vehicle identification number (VIN) or number plate, it is stored encrypted and only the last few characters are ever shown to anyone, including you, after it's saved.

Phone number: only collected if you choose to add one, and only shown publicly on a listing if you explicitly choose to share it.

Messages: the content of messages you send to other users through the platform, so the conversation can be delivered and so we can investigate a report of misuse.

Usage information: which listings you've viewed recently (so we can show you "recently viewed"), your saved searches and favourites, and basic technical information like IP address and browser type for security and fraud prevention (for example, rate-limiting and detecting automated abuse).

How we use it

- To operate your account and show you the platform's features (favourites, saved searches, messages, dealer storefronts). - To send you transactional emails you'd expect (listing approved, new message, saved-search alerts) — you can turn off optional alerts at any time. - To moderate listings and investigate reports of misuse or fraud. - To keep the platform secure, including an append-only audit log of staff actions on accounts and listings, which is never used for marketing.

We do not sell your personal information to third parties, and we do not use your data for advertising profiling.

Cookies

We use a small number of essential cookies to keep you signed in and to protect forms against cross-site attacks. We don't use third-party advertising or tracking cookies.

Third parties

Suburb and postcode data is sourced from GeoNames under a Creative Commons licence (see the site footer). We use an email delivery provider to send account and notification emails on our behalf, under their own privacy and security commitments — they only ever see the minimum needed to deliver that email.

Your rights

You can access and correct your account information at any time from your account settings. To request a copy of your data, ask us to correct inaccurate information, or ask us to delete your account and associated personal information, contact us — we will action genuine requests as soon as reasonably possible, subject to information we're required to keep for legal, security or dispute-resolution purposes (for example, a limited record of a resolved report).

You can delete your own account at any time from account settings, which requires confirming your password.

Children

Australia Motors is not intended for anyone under 18.

We may update this policy from time to time; the "last updated" context is available from the admin team on request. Continuing to use the platform after a change means you accept the updated policy.
